ABOUT ME
My name is Steven Reese, and I am a recent graduate of the Teaching Writing and Language concentration Master's program within DePaul's University's Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse. I completed my degree in June 2023 and am looking forward to a future career teaching First-Year Writing at an urban community college or university.
My undergraduate studies were in History, but it was during my time as a History student that I found a passion for writing instruction. When I reflect on my educational experiences at the undergraduate level, some of the most meaningful and rewarding occurred during the peer-review portion of the writing process. This step gave students the opportunity to see our work with a fresh set of eyes by handing it over to one of our peers for critique and discussion. I enjoyed the peer-review process most because it gave me the practical opportunity to help someone more effectively use written communication to advance their ideas and reach their academic goals. Writing seemed to come more naturally to me, and I felt it was my responsibility to share the wealth, so to speak. After my first peer-review partner tearfully thanked me for helping her earn her first A on a college paper, I felt an enormous sense of accomplishment and realized that I had perhaps discovered a passion for helping others become better writers and communicators.
I am particularly interested in the intersections between Writing Studies and Disability Studies and how educators can make writing instruction and communication more accessible and effective for all students of all abilities.
I live in Chicago, IL with my partner, Bradley, and our dog, Timber. When I'm not reading, writing, and teaching, you'll most likely find me lounging at the beach, obsessing over my plants, baking, or attending a concert.
